What wood species do you work with? What are the finish options?
We stock our most frequently used wood species (maple, oak, walnut) and work with most wood species domestic and exotic. Please call us to discuss options for exotic woods. We do not offer stain or color options on End Grain surfaces. Different wood species may be combined to create patterns in the overall surface. We offer green options such as Antique Heart Pine and Antique Chestnut collected from aged homes and barns. We also use fast growth wood such as Lyptus and Bamboo.
Are End Grain surfaces stain and waterproof?
End Grain tops do not include a finish and will require regular oiling. After some time, the oil build-up will start to make a resistance to water on your surface. This type of top can easily be sanded down to remove unwanted stains.
What do I do if I see cracks?
Cracks on edges and internally can be characteristics of End Grain wood tops. This issue occurs during climate changes in the home and is especially pronounced during the first heating season. This is most common in thicker End Grain products. We consider this to be normal and not a warranty issue. Please contact us for more information if you have an issue with your End Grain surface.
Do End Grain surfaces require special care?
End Grain surfaces require regular oiling to keep them from drying out and splitting. Please see our "Care" page for more detailed information about caring for your surface.
Can I cut on an End Grain surface? Can I put hot items on the surface?
Our Butcher Block countertops including End Grain and Edge Grain construction styles are perfect for cutting, chopping & food preparation. We recommend the use of trivets or potholders on all wood surfaces.
Can a sink be built into the design?
End Grain surfaces can include a sink, although there is not a finish to protect them so regular oiling is essential. Some construction styles are better suited for sink installation. Wide and Standard plank tops are a great choice for a a sink because they are waterproof; The marine oil finish protects the top from water stains.
Is it possible to have a built up edge for my countertop?
Yes, we can do a built-up edge. When possible we prefer to build full thickness tops to ensure the stability of the top; it's also more cost effective since it is labor intensive to build up the edge. Some exotic wood species are not available thicker than 1&1/2" so a built up edge is a perfect solution to giving the appearance of a thicker top.
