Copper FAQ

What does it look like?
Copper is a classic, rustic material best known for its durability and anti-bacterial properties. It is a naturally reddish brown in appearance, matte copper will develop with a patina similar to brick in color. Professionally patinated copper will be darker and appear more uniform in color than copper given the opportunity to develop its patina naturally. Both matte and patinated copper has a living finish that will continue to evolve through the lifetime of the product.
What does it look like? How does it change over time? Does it rust?
Over time, your surface will acquire a unique pattern of use. Areas most frequently used will appear lighter and smoother than areas used less frequently. Copper countertops are not meant to represent a monolithic surface; slight scratching, pinholes and soldering marks add to its charm. Copper does not rust. Hammered copper will have a wavy undulated surface that will not be machine flat. Every copper surface will be unique. Depending on the size and shape of your surface there may be a non-welded butt seam or a silicone-sealed field joint. No on-site welding is necessary.
Where can copper be used?
Copper is a great surface for kitchen countertops, bar tops, backsplashes and range hoods.
What are the finish options?
Copper is available in a mirror-polish or a matte finish. We can also add a patina to your countertop, cutting the time it takes to create a natural patina. For backsplashes we are able to add texture or quilted patterns.
How thick can a copper surface be?
We use a 14 gauge sheet copper (approx. 1/16" thick). The sheets are bonded to a solid waterproof MDF and the front edge can be built up to any desired thickness, however 1-1/2" is standard.
Can a sink be built into the design?
We can fabricate a custom integral sink (rectangle or square) and weld it in as a seamless part of any top. We are also able to under-mount or cut-in any sink that you provide. Holes for faucets and accessories such as soap dispensers are also available.
Can I put hot items on copper surfaces?
Boiling water is not a problem, but always use a hot plate or trivet when transferring items to a countertop.
Can I cut on a copper surface?
If you wish to minimize scratch marks and preserve your knife blades, we recommend using a cutting board.

What type of warranty fo you offer?
Our copper products come with a full one year warranty. Brooks Custom will repair or replace, at our option, any faulty products deemed to have been caused by manufacturing defects. Items must be returned to our location if not installed by us. Indicental or adjacent materials are not included with the warranty. All shipped products must be removed from their crates within 24 hours of arrival and inspected. Any claims for shipping damage must be reported within this window.
