Pewter FAQ

  • What does it look like?
Pewter is a gray color similar to stainless steel and will develop a patina and change over time. The patina creates a darker gray color with satin sheen that sets it apart from other metals. Professionally patinated pewter will appear darker and more uniform than pewter given the opportunity to age over time.
  • What can I expect?
Pewter is a malleable, yet durable and non-porous material which makes it great for countertops, bars and range hoods. Over time your surface will develop a unique pattern of use. Areas more frequently used will appear smoother and lighter, whereas areas less often will appear darker. Acidic liquids such as lemon juice may remove patina whereas other liquids may add to it. The patina will change and develop over time and can be removed as well. Pewter will not rust. Pewter surfaces are not meant to be monolithic surfaces; light scratches, pinholes and soldering marks are to be expected on the surface. These slight imperfections give this artisanal metal it's charm. Hammered pewter will have a wavy undulated surface and will not be machine flat. Depending on the dimensions, a non-welded butt seam or silicone filled field joint will be used on site.
  • Where can pewter be used?
Pewter is a wonderful surface for kitchen countertops, bar tops, backsplashes and range hoods. Pewter can also be used for paneling such as that of a fireplace facade.
  • What are the finish options?
Pewter is available in a matte finish or mirror-polished finish. We are also able to add patina to your surface cutting the time needed to naturally form patina. No coating or lacquer is applied to pewter surfaces.
  • What dimensions are possible with pewter?
Thickness: We use 18-Gague sheet (aprox. 1/16" thick). The sheets are bonded to solid waterproof MDF and can be built up to your desired thickness. Edges can be built up to any thickness, although 1-1/2" is standard.
  • Can I cut on a pewter surface? Can I put hot items on Pewter?
Pewter is a very soft metal and can be prone to scratches. If you wish to minimize scratch marks and preserve your knife blades we encourage you to use a cutting board for chopping. Always use a hot plate or trivet when placing hot items on your pewter surface.
  • Can a sink be built into the design?
We can fabricate a custom integral (rectangular or square) sink and weld it into the surface to make a seamless design. We can also under-mount or cut-in any sink that you provide. Holes for faucets and accessories such as hot water inserts and soap dispensers are all possibilities.
  • How long does it take to get my pewter product?
Typically our lead-times are 4-12 weeks (seasonally adjusted) to fabricate your product from the time we receive your approved shop drawings.
