Copper Construction Details

About Copper Countertops

  • Made with 14-gauge sheets (approximately 1/16” thick).
  • Available in any thickness, but 1 ½” is standard.
  • The proper filler material for welding is copper (not silver or lead alloy solder).
  • Brooks Custom bonds copper to solid, waterproof MDF, equal in height to the front edge thickness
  • Any length or layout is possible. However, very long or very wide works may require non-welded butt seams.
  • For very large tops, we use a mechanical, interlocked, silicone sealed field joint. Our technicians do not weld on-site.
  • Copper is a reactive metal. It will oxidize and change with daily use.

What does it look like?

  • Copper is a classic, rustic material best known for its durability and anti-bacterial properties.
  • Like most rustic metals, copper will develop a patina over time. Professionally patinated copper will be darker and will appear more uniform in color than copper given the opportunity to develop its patina naturally.
  • Both matte and patinated copper has a living finish and will continue to evolve through the lifetime of the countertop.

What can I expect?

  • Over time, your countertop will acquire a unique pattern of use. Areas used most frequently will appear lighter and smoother than areas that see less use, which will appear darker.
  • Copper countertops do not and are not meant to represent a monolithic surface. As such, you can expect to see slight imperfections in the countertop surface.
  • Because copper is an artisanal metal, they will show slight scratches, pinholes and soldering marks that add to its country charm.
  • Hammered copper surfaces are not machined flat. Because of this, the surface will be wavy and undulated.
  • This level of the charm makes each and every copper countertop unique, and no two will look exactly alike.
  • Depending on the size and shape of your countertop, it may require a non-welded butt seam.
  • Very large tops may require a mechanical, silicone-sealed field joint. No on-site welding is necessary.
