Edge Grain Wood FAQ

  • What does it look like?
Edge grain surfaces are made up boards turned up on their side so that the edge of the board are now the top surface. Boards are joined together to create the surface.
  • What wood species do you work with? What are the finish options?
We stock our most frequently used woods (walnut, oak, maple) and are able to source and work with most domestic and exotic wood species. Call us to discuss your options. We offer green options such as repurposed Antique Heart Pine and Antique Chestnut from aged homes and barns. We also offer fast-growth woods such as Lyptus and Bamboo. We do not offer stain options on our Edge-Grain products.
  • Are Edge Grain surfaces stain or waterproof?
Yes. Edge Grain tops do not include a finish and will require regular oiling. After some time, a well-oiled top will build up a long term resistance to water and stains. This type of top can easily be sanded down to remove cut marks and stains.
  • Is it possible to have a built up edge for my countertop?
Yes. We can do a built-up edge. When possible we prefer to build full thickness tops to ensure the stability of the top; it's also more cost effective since it is labor intensive to build up the edge. Some exotic wood species are not available in thicknesses greater than 1&1/2" so a built up edge is a perfect solution to give the appearance of a thicker top.
  • Can you cut on an Edge Grain surface?
Yes. Our butcher block countertops including Edge and End grain construction styles are perfect for cutting, chopping and food preparation.
  • Do Edge Grain surfaces require a lot of maintance and care?
No. Edge Grain countertops do require regular oiling to keep them from drying out, cracking and splitting. Weekly at first, then monthly. Please see our "care" tab for more detailed information about maintaining your Edge-Grain surface.
  • How long does it take to get my Edge-Grain product?
Our turn-around time is generally about 2-3 weeks to complete from the time we receive approved shop drawings. Please see our Quote page to submit a job inquiry or email your detailed plans to quotes@brookscustom.com
