Wide Plank Wood FAQ

  • What does it look like?
We hand select boards with the highest quality. We make every effort to use boards with similar grain patterns and color tones. The boards don't include any sapwood, ensuring that the surface has a beautiful natural flow. Wide plank widths range from 5-8". We offer Antique Heart Pine and Antique Chestnut sourced from old homes and barns for more of a rustic look. We are also able to source sustainable quick-growing wood such as Lyptus and Bamboo.
  • What wood species do you work with? What are the finish options?
We stock our most frequently requested wood species (maple, oak, walnut) and are able to quickly source most domestic and exotic wood species. Please call us to discuss your options. We offer several of our standard stain options for Wide Plank surfaces. You can view these options in our Material Poirtfolio pages. Custom stain options are also available. Our wood tops include a marine finish which will fully protect the top from water and stains. Marine finish surfaces arrive glossy and will dull down with use. The top will develop a patina, thus creating personality in the surface. You may see wispy scratches over time with use.
  • Can a sink be built into the design?
Yes! An under-mount or cut-in sink is possible with wide plank surfaces. Because we use a marine grade finish, our surfaces are waterproof and ideal around a sink.
  • Is it possible to have a built-up edge for my countertop?
Yes, we can do a built-up edge. There are several complex profiles in our edge library for this. When possible, we prefer to build full thickness tops from high-quality solid timbers to ensure the stability of the top and integrity of the design; it’s also more cost effective since it is labor intensive to build up the edge. Some exotic wood species are not available thicker than 1 ½” so a built up edge is a perfect solution to give the appearance of a thicker top.
  • Can I cut on a wide plank surface?
We recommend using a cutting board for chopping to avoid scratches and to prolong the blade of your knives as well as to protect the hand-applied marine finish.
  • Can I put hot items on wide plank surfaces?
In order to protect the hand-rubbed marine finish we recommend using a trivet.
  • Do wood surfaces require more maintanence?
No. Our wide plank surfaces do not require much maintenance. The marine finish lasts for the lifetime of the product. Occasional application of cleaning products will do well to maintain the luster of the finish. Please see our "Care" page for more detailed information.
